Replacement Windows - Measuring the Value

June 6th, 2007 by Aaron O'Hanlon

There are a number of great reasons to consider installing replacement windows in your home. The technology used to construct vinyl frames and insulated glass has improved drastically in recent years. Energy-efficient vinyl replacement windows that look great and are affordable are becoming the best option for many homeowners.

For a number of years, wooden replacement windows were the standard of quality and longevity. Wood was favored for its stability and its natural insulating characteristics. That notion is quickly changing however, as homeowners and contractors alike are becoming aware of the value and easy maintenance that comes with choosing to install vinyl.

Understanding Materials

The production of vinyl replacement windows now includes a number of features that makes them much more than just a pane of glass inside a frame. Foam-filled frames with mitered joints increase the aesthetic value of windows, while also making your home much more sound proof. Insulated glass made up of two or even three panes of glass contributes to the sound-deadening quality of the replacements.

Specialized coatings, such as Low-E, combined with Argon-filled insulating spaces between the panes, serve to increase the insulating qualities of replacement windows. Not only will your new vinyl replacements stop drafts, advanced features work to stop the transmission of radiant heat. As you learn more about available features, it will quickly become apparent that the cost of replacing your old wooden windows with something better will be worth every penny.

Measuring the Value

While the initial cost of replacing the windows of your house can be intimidating, it doesn’t take very long to realize just how quickly your replacement windows pay for themselves. In an effort to measure the value of your best replacement options, you need to consider several factors. The first is simply how much your heating and cooling costs will drop. Energy-efficient replacement windows will lower your heating bills.

You also need to take into consideration the value of your home itself. High-quality replacement windows can play a large roll in driving up the resale value of your home. Whether you are trying to increase the appraised value of your home so that you can borrow against it, or are actually in the market to sell your house, buying replacement windows is one of the first projects to undertake.

Finding someone you can trust

The biggest challenge that you may face when selecting replacement windows is finding an installer that you trust. Don’t take a contractor’s qualifications of installing house windows for granted. Labor will be a big part of the cost of replacing your old windows, so you need to be confident that you are going to get what you are paying for. Ask plenty of questions of contractors and be sure to follow up on the references that a contractor provides with their estimate. If anything at all makes you feel uncomfortable, keep looking for a contractor that you trust. Remember, the contractor works for you and should be going out of the way to treat you well.

Some contractors only buy replacement product from specific manufacturers. They may be specifically trained to work with that particular brand of replacement windows, or because they get a good price break from the vendor. Regardless of the reason, if you speak with a contractor who doesn’t use a brand of replacements that you want, find someone else rather than change your mind on brand. Chances are that you will have taken the time to do your own extensive research on different brands and will have an idea of what features you want. If you are going to make this large of an investment and renovation, you need to find a contractor who can meet your needs.

Three Improvements for Increased Home Energy Efficiency

    April 6th, 2007 by Aaron O'Hanlon

Residents of the Northern regions of the United States are accustomed to severe temperature changes throughout the year, and are prepared to make adjustments from season-to-season. Unfortunately, even the most weathered consumers are getting outpaced by steadily rising costs in both home heating and cooling. In many areas of the Northeast, where winters can be brutally cold and summers scorching, this efficiency challenge is especially prevalent. New England residents have turned to relatively cheap, clean burning gas to heat and cool their homes. Total U.S. residential energy consumption is projected to increase 17 percent from 1995 - 2015. 10 years ago, the price of natural gas was hovering at an affordable $2.50 per unit (MMBTU). Today, many residents of the Northeast are feeling the pinch as prices have leaped upwards of $8, and they are looking for solutions to take the bite out of those rising heating bills in the winter and air conditioning costs in the summer. Popular home heating and cooling cost reduction recommendations include: 1) Install a tankless gas water heater: For households of less than 4 people with a centralized node for plumbing, high-capacity gas water heaters are one of the largest offenders of natural gas waste. Even the best insulated water heaters have to run constantly on cold days to heat water that may not even be used. Tankless heaters heat what you need, when you need it, providing enough hot water to run a 15 minute shower at optimum temperature - around 110 degrees - with minimal downtime in between. An industry standard is around 5 gallons per minute (GPM) which is close to the flow rate of many modern showers. The math is simple: Less hot water heated, less gas used, less money spent. 2) Replace your windows: According to a recent study by the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE), about one-third of a home’s total heat loss occurs through a dwelling’s windows and doors. Air will bleed right through bad seals and eroded window frames. Modern replacement windows are engineered to keep your home warmer in winter and cooler in summer. Consumers should look for windows with triple glazing, sealed barriers with inert argon and krypton gas and those made of moisture resistant materials. Consumers are also urged to look for energy efficiency ratings for windows they intend to buy. It is a good rule of thumb to look for those with the lowest “U-Factor” of all windows tested by the independent National Fenestration Rating Council.

    3) Consider photovoltaics: At a time when energy costs are a major part of a home budget, becoming more energy efficient is of the utmost importance. Passive solar panels not only help insulate your roof, but there are now photovoltaic designs that heat water and generate electricity. With today’s designs approaching the break-even cost point against their historical fossil fuel competitors, the sun can be the best friend your house ever had. Costs have come down drastically and efficiencies have improved so much that your power company is probably already looking over their shoulder. This article is brought to you by Newpro, a replacement windows manufacturer and installer in New England. Newpro is so confident that their windows will save you money - they put it in writing. The Newpro Fuel Savings Pledge states that if all windows in the heated areas of a home are replaced with their products, the owner will see at least a 40% reduction in fuel consumption or Newpro will pay the difference - up to $500. For more information please visit www.Newpro.com or call 866-573-8310 to schedule a consultation.
