Sales Tip: 3 Reasons Why Industry Jargon Is Hurting Your Sales

June 20, 2007 by Aaron O'Hanlon · Leave a Comment

If you were told that the “jargon” or language that your industry uses was hurting your sales, would you believe it?

Well, not only is it destroying your closing rate and average sale but it is also making it harder for you to communicate with your customer. In many cases it is alienating them beyond the point where they can barely understand you.

Let me a look into the kind of your customer and give you the reasons why industry jargon may be like a wrecking ball through your sales results:

REASON #1 - You make your buyer uncomfortable - Your buyer or anybody you deal with for that matter, is not impressed with your inside terminology that many in the contracting industry can’t seem to live without.

It makes them uncomfortable when you are always constantly defining phrases, efficiency ratings or factors to them after every sentence. You know what I mean. Have you ever heard yourself say, “This is a 14 SEER unit Mrs. Jones, which means (BLAH, BLAH, BLAH)” as you keep on blathering like you are in love with the sound of your own voice.

If you are like most, you probably get white calcium deposits on the sides of you mouth from broadcasting or worse yet, reading the literature to them like a bedtime story.

How do you explain efficiency without putting them to sleep? Tell them how this can save them money or help the earth by consuming less electricity or something else they can comprehend that means something to THEM instead.

REASON #2 - You can wrongly assume they know the jargon — What’s worse than someone who always talks down to the client by explaining jargon after every sentence? The sales person who assumes the buyer knows the jargon already or even worse isn’t even aware that they are using it in their language.

Do you doubt what I am saying is true? I suggest that you record yourself and listen to what you are saying on just one call. If you can stand listening to yourself, you pass the test.

Imagine if in mid-sentence, your boss just started talking Chinese to you. This is probably what your customer is feeling when you slip into DB or EER ratings when explaining things.

Ask them what they have heard about the system. You will be amazed at how much they DO know already.

REASON #3 - It sounds just like the other guys — The number one rule in sales is if your competition is doing something then you should STOP doing it. That is, unless you want to keep on sounding just like them.

If customers DO know the jargon, where did they learn it? From your competition of course. If using jargon will help you so much, then why didn’t they just buy from them when they were “carpet bombed” with industry jargon by them?

What are they looking for? Believe me, they are praying for someone, just anyone, who is different than all of the others they have had at their home to this point. Want to ruin your chances?

Go ahead and start talking like the other guys who just failed before you got there. Or you can do it the right way and just be yourself. Explain it as if you are talking to your 3 year old.

Using industry jargon has no meaning to anyone but people in the industry. Your job is not to educate the customer but to help them understand what your services will do to benefit them. Just explain these benefits in their language and not yours.

Things You Need To Know About Bathroom Plumbing

June 17, 2007 by Aaron O'Hanlon · Leave a Comment

When you start with the bathroom plumbing, you need to consider a few things. The plumbing has to meet the needs of a busy bathroom as well as installing the bathroom plumbing correctly. By accomplishing these two steps, you will ensure that you have less repair of the plumbing in the future.

You will need the correct fittings, sizes of pipes and lengths that fit the toilet, sink, tub and shower. Also included in the bathroom plumbing, you need to make sure the hot water heater is correctly installed and the size of the unit is big enough to fill the needs of your family. No one wants to run out of hot water when taking a shower early in the morning.

When you do your bathroom plumbing, you need to use up to date materials and not out dated materials you received from somewhere else. Plumbing today is more affordable than what we think. The fittings and the pipes need to connect correctly to prevent leaking and future repair.

When installing your plumbing, you need to keep in mind that everything has to be fitted and tight. This includes using plumber’s tale, which many beginners forget. This down the line might result in loosening fittings as well as water leakage, which can damage the floor. When in doubt, call your local plumber. Pipes that are behind walls and under floors need special consideration, if you have just one leak, damage will result and you will never see the problem until it is too late.

Things you will need to install your bathroom plumbing:

• Plumbers tape
• Pipe wrenches
• Correct Pipes
• Correct fittings

As you can see, you do not need many tools, but you do need the correct fittings and pipes. If you have a doubt about length of pipe you need, measure the distance from the given area to the area by the sewage pipe and you should have no problems installing your plumbing. When you plan to remodel the bathroom or upgrade the plumbing, you need to understand where the shut off valves need to be as well. If you ever have a problem, the shut off value is important for stopping water from flowing to the fixture in question. Therefore, get your materials together and do some plumbing, but do it the right way.
